job search analogy

Breathe! Surgery / job search analogy On Friday morning after surgery the nurse kept bugging me to breathe. I think he was holding my hand or patting my arm. That was so annoying. My wife was also encouraging me to breathe.  To make it worse, I had to breathe through my nose so when I kept dozing off and breathing through my mouth they would bug me, er, wake me, and remind me to breathe through my nose (since that is where the oxygen tube was). So very annoying. I just wanted to rest. Heres the analogy: In my job search I was told I had to network.  People all around, and books, and websites everyone was like network!  Its how you find a job! I didnt want to network.  And it was annoying to hear this continual chant (network! network!). And then I realized I was networking wrong (without a purpose or system) and I was told to network with purpose (a la Never Eat Alone). I really just wanted to mope while my resume and job applications would do the hard work for me. But that wasnt the right thing for me to do.  It was as ineffective as breathing through my mouth right after surgery.  The actions where there, but it wouldnt get oxygen in my body. I know networking is hard.  Its not the funnest thing you can think of doing. But its the thing that will move you to the next level.  For me, breathing right and getting oxygen meant I could go home. For you, networking right could mean you get out of unemployment. Its worth it Im telling you NETWORK! Breathe! Surgery / job search analogy On Friday morning after surgery the nurse kept bugging me to breathe. I think he was holding my hand or patting my arm. 7 Things You Should Never Say to Your Boss (EVER)

7 Things You Should Never Say to Your Boss (EVER) Are you friendly with your boss? Are they  someone that you can laugh and joke with, or are they someone you are petrified of? Whichever situation it is, there are some things you should simply  never say to them. Ever. Heres our run down of the top 7: 1. I cant! When it comes to work, there is no such word as cant.  Bosses would love for you to be able to do something, or at least try to do it. If you tell them I cant it not only shows a lack of unwillingness, but a lack of confidence too. You should be confident at work, if you want to go far. If you give things a go and fail, your boss will at least appreciate that you tried.  Its the same for thats not my area or thats not part of my job. Basically, do a Jim Carrey and try to always say yes, and  perhaps follow up with, I can try my best. 2. Can I have a raise? You may dream about having enough money to build a bed made from notes, but steer clear of asking for a raise (or a promotion). Today Im gonna ask for a raisewish me luck! Jon David Sandez (@JonDavidSandez1) September 23, 2016 Both raises and promotions are there to be earned through hard work, effort and results. Instead of asking, present a well-written proposal (which proves why are you important to the company) and ask your boss to review it. If they feel you can advance, theyll give you what you want.  Once the work is done, then maybe you can build your bed from notes. READ MORE: How NOT to Ask for a Raise or Promotion 3. Can I leave early? All full time jobs have an allocation of personal holiday (sometimes called annual leave), and this is there to be used for personal reasons. If you want to go away to a sunny country with your partner, or want to take a day off every so often, use your holiday. https://twitter.com/drdareing/status/781659563560873984 Your boss does not want to be paying for you to go home early and play on your Xbox.  If you do want to leave an hour or two early for legitimate reasons, earn any extra time you need by making up your hours, or just use your holiday allocation. Your mum will appreciate it even more, trust me. 4. Can I come in late? See above. 5. How do I benefit from this? Sometimes (or most of the time), your work and projects will involve helping your colleagues. If youre not working alone, youll be part of a team of people who will all have strengths, weaknesses and passions. I love my job, I love working in a team. So much potential, this next year is going to be a big one. ?? Joe (@JayFly_7) October 28, 2014 Its always important to be a team player, as its a trait that a lot of bosses see in a positive light. If youre able to work well in a team, your boss may even promote you to team leader. 6. Ill leave! This is a must dont ever threaten to leave the company. If you feel like your job is something you dont want to do, go home and weigh up the pros and cons.  Which parts of your job are keeping you in there? Are there elements which are making your career bad for your health? Compare them and see which are the most crucial. I really want to quit my job so I have enough time to focus on myself and self improvement. brandycake ?????? (@brandycake_) September 15, 2016 If you make a swift decision and say youll go to your boss before thinking, itll show you as unprofessional, and theyll consider you a flight risk, which is something you dont want to be. 7. Im bored. Every so often, you may have a moment at work where youve been working on the same project or client for a long time. Everything may be mixing into one and you cant tell the difference between your various responsibilities. The fact of the matter is, youre being paid to do your job. Your boss gives you a job to do, and you have to work to make it interesting and fun. Never tell your boss that youre bored, as it will show that you are not capable of doing the job at hand.  If you want to suggest different ways of sprucing up your day to day list, then go for it telling someone youre bored is too negative to come back from. Take these tips to hand and youll never fall out with your boss and hopefully, youll end up with a fun job, with a fair holiday allocation, and a payrise or promotion!

How to start a business from your corporate cube

How to start a business from your corporate cube Starting a company is cheap enough that you dont need to raise a lot of money to do it, but you still need to feed yourself. A popular route is the in-between step of being an entrepreneur while still working in a corporate job. This means there are a lot of people running companies from their cubes. Sort of. Its contrary to just about every company policy for you to set up your widget shop inside your cube and solicit your co-workers business. But most startups can skate past the corporate policy restrictions because the founder works after hours. So the entrepreneur is sitting in the cube even if the company is not, and it makes for a difficult balancing act. Here are ten ways to manage entrepreneurship from your corporate cubicle: 1. Dont tell your co-workers. You will want to tell them. They will say, How was your weekend? and youll want to say, I got two new clients and I am feeling like a startup stud! Dont say that. Even if youre not doing your company at your work, it still feels like cheating to a co-worker. They dont want to hear youd rather be working on something else besides their stuff. You need to keep a positive profile at work even while you do your startup: The best entrepreneurs have solid networks. 2. Dont blame your problems on lack of time. Its certainly a luxury to have tons of time on your hands to focus on your company all day. But most people dont have that. Most people who start companies have kids or a day job or a girlfriend or college courses something that distracts them. Dont tell yourself you would do better if you had more time. Just do better now. Be smarter. Everyone is short on time all the time. Its not an excuse. 3. Dont have guilt. Yes it is morally questionable to be a salaried employee and turn your cube into a call center for your other business. But you can do a ton of personal business from your cube like call your landlord or the plumber or make plane reservation in order to make more time to do your business from home. Most cubicle workers spend two hours a day surfing for personal reasons. And these people do not have side businesses at home. So its fair for you to do it, too. 4. Get on a stupid project at work. When you have your own business you think about it all the time. You are responsible for everything, so there is no coasting while someone else deals with a problem or a project. Fortunately, that sort of coasting is rampant in big companies. So if you are starting a business at home, get on a project at work that lets you coast that will give extra mental energy to let thoughts of your own company jump around in your head. 5. Look for like-minded people at work. In most companies there are some people thinking like you trying to get something off the ground while they spend their days in their cube. Its so hard to keep believing in yourself when the startup is more idea than business. Its hard not to toss in the towel, but you are less likely to give up if you have other entrepreneurs in your life. To sniff out the other entrepreneurs look for people who dash outside the building every day to take calls. (Reality check: If the calls are ten minutes, its a startup. If the calls are a half-hour, its a new girlfriend.) 6. Go to the gym on your lunch break. You think you are doing something so big and so challenging and you are even holding down a full-time job while you do it, so of course you have no time to go to the gym. But exercise provides mental traits of an entrepreneur: You think more clearly, you are more self-confident, resilient to setback, and you become a person who inspires confidence in other people. 7. Sit on a yoga ball instead of a chair. Everything you need to do to have a startup and a corporate job at the same time requires self-discipline. And this might be why entrepreneurs are happier than most people because they have good self-discipline and people with self-discipline are more likely to get what they want in their life. You can get self-discipline by working on your posture. No kidding. So get a ball chair for your cube. Psychologist have found that if you make one, small change in your life that requires self-discipline, like improving your posture, then you are more able to make other changes in your life that require self-discipline. 8. Partner with a stay-at-home-parent. In general, when I have started companies, I tried not to hire people with kids because they are less able to jump for investors, more torn between where their head and heart are at any given time, and anyway, todays parents generally do not work insanely long hours. (Yes, this is an illegal hiring practice. But its common.) So anyway, if you are starting a company from your cube you are missing exactly what a stay-at-home parent has: Flexibility during the work day. One of the things that make for a successful entrepreneur is partnering with someone who can fill in the spots where you are weak, according to Andrew Zacharakis, professor of entrepreneurship at Babson College. 9. Stop fantasizing that a credit card could fund your cubicle escape. Especially in the current credit crunch, its important to be conservative in how much you bet on this side-business of yours. The most successful entrepreneurs are not actually huge risk takers but people who intuitively mitigate risk wherever they can, according to Saras Sarasvathy, professor of business at the University of Virginia. The point of entrepreneurship, after all, is to get out of the cubicle, not tie yourself to it forever paying off your debt. 10. Believe in yourself. Entrepreneurship is lonely and frustrating. This is not something people talk about a lot because the thing that makes entrepreneurs successful is a crazy optimism that they can create something big from nothing. But underneath that optimism, is a fear that things will never work. The feelings of loneliness and fear will be exacerbated in your cubicle, where you will be surrounded by people who are satisfied with stable jobs, regular paychecks, and having someone else take responsibility for the ultimate bottom line. In your cube is the time you will have to be your best self: Confident, productive, disciplined and optimistic. No small feat, for sure, but thats why entrepreneurship brings out the best in us. Thats why its so enticing.

Using RSUME To Manage Inventory Data

Using RSUME To Manage Inventory DataRSUME (request runthrough unit report) is a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) component of the server management system that allows the control of inventory, inventory automation and inventory tracking. RSUME is an important component in any inventory tracking system because it is the hub from which all of the other inventory control modules run. In fact, without RSUME, the other inventory modules in the system would not be able to effectively function. There are three main concepts that RSUME brings to the table that makes it so valuable to your inventory tracking system. The first concept is the ability to manage all inventory on a single inventory report. Inventory control and management will be easier when the system runs one report at a time. The second concept is the central database that contains all of the different inventories and the ability to pull a specific inventory data from this database. The third concept to RSUME and inventor y reporting is the reporting interface. There are two main ways of doing this in Windows. The reporting tool interface and the inventory specific reporting tools. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but the reporting interface has more flexibility, while the inventory reporting tool is more robust and can perform much more complex tasks.Since RSUME is the RSUM component of the inventory management system, it is important that you install this on every server that you will need to run the inventory management system. If you want to do the reporting on each inventory, then you need to do that on each server. On the other hand, if you only want to pull information from the RSUM component of the inventory management system, then you only need to do that on the servers where the inventory reporting tools will be used.In order to manage RSUM, you need to install it on each server. The inventory reporting tools in the RSUM report will pull RSUM reports and create them into a report. The reporting tool interface will load this report into the inventory management system. It is very important that you use the WMI integration to control the RSUM as it makes it very easy to pull the necessary data from the inventory management module and display it in the right format in the reporting tool. You can control a lot of the actions with the reporting tool interface. You can use different reports to change the order of the reports. This makes it easy to change the order of the reporting tool interface in the inventory management module. The WMI functionality in the inventory management module makes it easy to use the RSUM as it provides the report to the user and displays the inventory data in the right format. Once the user is happy with the data, he can export the data to a new report that he can then use to create a new inventory report that uses the WMI interface to change the order of the reports. It's that simple.RSUME is a complex tool, and it is up to you to make s ure that you are properly using the WMI tool to the best of your abilities. When you are ready to start your inventory management system, the RSUM reports from the reporting tool interface will simplify the task of creating the new inventory reports and creating new reports. This is especially true for the reporting tool, since the RSUM reporting tool is designed to produce only one report at a time.

Millennials vs. Generation Z How Do They Achieve Success in the Workplace

Millennials vs. Generation Z How Do They Achieve Success in the Workplace Today’s organizations are run by a workforce that’s made up of as many as five generations, all with various demands and different levels of engagement. While this mix offers diversification, millennials are slowly becoming the largest labor force, with Gen Z following suit after entering the scene in 2015. Inevitably, both millennials and Gen Z workers will dominate the workplace, making it important for HR teams, recruitment firms, and hiring managers to know what makes them tick, so they can be given the best workplace environment possible and eventually realize their potential. Both millennials and Gen Z have skills and characteristics unique to their generation, which affect their perspective of the workplace and how they try to achieve success. To be able to manage them effectively, there are different approaches, making it crucial to know how to make them work for the sake of building a team of achievers. Only then will you able to manage them successfully and steer your organization to the kind of success you’re trying to achieve. To help you in this noble undertaking, here’s an informative infographic from manilarecruitment.com on how millennials and Gen Z can achieve success in the workplace.

Doula Jess Larson

Grown-Up Gigs Virtual Assistant/Doula Jess Larson This is Jess! Image stole from her website. When I came across Jess Larsen as a guest video blogger on Spring, it was friend love at first sight. Her video on Self Care/Tough Love prompted my own video response (no, a mere comment on her video was not enough), and when I digged deeper into Jess website I found out that she wasnt just a Virtual Assistant shes a doula, too! When we realized we lived mere miles from each other, we planned to meet up so I can pick her brain as to how she manages two careers at once without her head exploding. We had such a lovely time ( the bestest dinner ever at Aurora, yum!) that not only did she agree to meet up with me again (yay new friend!), but she agreed to be interviewed for Grown-Up Gigs right here! And then, when Mercury Retrograde effed up our video chat, she agreed to meet me on my conference line to record just the audio. And THEN, when my phone died for no reason in the middle of the call, she agreed to put the calls together lickety-split to make a cohesive interview. So you total ly have to listen, because not only is this interview totally awesometastic (we talk about being an expert while being a Renaissance Soul, and about how you can leave the day job without a certain date/number in mind, other amazeballs stuff), but it was so much work to put it together. Stupid Mercury! (I love blaming stupid things happening on planets). You can visit Jess on her website, on Facebook on the Twitter. Thanks for being so awesometastic, Jess! ******************************************************************************************************* Super Secretnessity: Did you meet Pierre François Frédéric, the host of The Declaration of You ?Hes French, he sings, and he loves Judge Judy!
